For the second year ever, a bobwhite quail hunting season will be open in 2018. These birds are native to our part of South Dakota but are quite rare because of widespread habitat loss due primarily to the construction of the Missouri River dams and subsequent flooding of riparian vegetation. Because we are at the northern extent of their natural range; bobwhites are quite succeptible to loss during harsh winters.

Over the years, bobwhites have been seen sporadically in various places on the Reservation. Opportunities to harvest one of these elusive birds will be rare, but open up the possibility of getting a small but trophy quality bird.
